Air Pollution Prevention

Illinois State University has been granted a Title V Clean Air Act Permit Program (CAAPP) Permit by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Bureau of Air. Air emissions from steam production require the University to have a CAAPP. In addition to the Title V CAAPP, ISU is required to report Greenhouse Gas Emissions based upon natural gas usage for University boilers.

The Illinois State University Heating Plant is used to provide steam to the ISU campus. Steam is used for multiple applications including building heat, building humidification, cooking, sterilization, heat for domestic hot water systems, and swimming pool water heat. The system includes four boilers tied into a common steam header. The peak campus steam load is typically less than 200,000 pounds of steam per hour. The total boiler plant capacity is approximately 380,000 pounds of steam per hour. All boilers use natural gas as the fuel source for steam production.
