AEDs On Campus
The Colleen O’Sullivan Law, Public Act 093-0910, as amended in Public Act 095-0712, requires at least one AED be provided at each Physical Fitness Facility, both indoor and outdoor, which are owned or operated by the University; and have one or more persons supervising physical fitness activities. AEDs have been provided in a majority of university buildings to allow for quick access throughout campus. These include publicly accessible AEDs located in wall-mounted cabinets and mobile AEDs that are used for transient applications, such as sporting events and practice.
Environmental Health & Safety coordinates the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program for the University. EHS maintains a current inventory of all AEDs on campus, sharing AED locations with our 911 centers and assisting departments with training their personnel on proper usage. AED Coordinators
There may be a need to designate departmental AED coordinators based on the location of AEDs, proximity to campus, and restricted access. Department coordinators are responsible for monthly inspections of AEDs. Having coordinators within departments allows workers to take ownership of AEDs in their building. Coordinators are asked to complete a monthly inspection and provide confirmation to EHS. If any issues involving an AED is discovered, it is the responsibility of the departmental coordinator to report the concern immediately to EHS.
AED Utilization
If an incident or situation results in the deployment and/or the actual use of an AED, an AED utilization form must be completed. This form allows Environmental Health and Safety to investigate the incident and notifies EHS that the AED will need to go through maintenance before being placed back into service.
