Hazardous Waste Management

EHS assists generators on campus to assure that hazardous waste is managed in accordance with regulations. However, the generator is ultimately responsible for managing their waste safely.

A hazardous waste is any material that may present a hazard to one's health or the environment. This includes:

  • spent or unused chemicals
  • cleaning solutions
  • oils, etc.

EHS will pick up properly documented and packaged waste and will accumulate them for eventual treatment, storage, or disposal. If there is any doubt whether a material should be managed as hazardous, contact EHS at (309) 438-8325.

Hazardous Waste Storage

All hazardous waste shall be:

  • labeled with a hazardous waste sticker that lists waste composition and generator information
  • stored in a safe and secure area
  • properly segregated to avoid incompatibilities
  • collected in a compatible storage container (closed and in good condition)
  • Containers should have at least 10 to 20 percent headspace left

Hazardous Waste Minimization

Generators are strongly encouraged to look for alternative procedures or products that will reduce or prevent hazardous waste generation.

Chemicals or other materials which have not been opened or are still in usable form can be saved from becoming waste by being offered for other University staff use.

Waste generated through scientific classroom instruction can be minimized by converting to micro scale experiments and incorporating material neutralization or inactivation into experimental procedures.
